The Trouble with Trying to Look Good: The Real Cost of Virtue Signaling

Hi there, I’m Joe Horvat from Joe's Talks, and today I want to chat about something that’s been on my mind: virtue signaling. Let’s break down what it is, why I think it’s not great for us, and how we can better handle situations where it might pop up.

What’s Virtue Signaling Anyway?

First off, what do we mean by virtue signaling? It’s when people say things or act a certain way just to show others that they’re good or morally right, especially on social media. They might not actually believe in what they’re saying but they want to look good in front of others.

Why It’s Not Great for Us

Here’s why I’m not a fan of virtue signaling:

It Makes Us Fake

When we virtue signal, we’re not being true to ourselves. We might end up saying things we don’t really believe just because we think it’ll make us look better. This can make us feel fake and even confused about what we really think and feel.

We Might End up Following the Crowd Without Thinking

Sometimes virtue signaling means we just go along with popular opinions without really thinking about them. It’s like we’re borrowing someone else’s beliefs to fit in. This isn’t great because it means we’re not making up our own minds about what’s important to us.

How to Keep It Authentic

So, what can we do about it? Here’s my take:

Think for Yourself!

Before you jump on a cause or share that post, take a moment to really think about it. Do you truly believe in what you’re saying? Make sure your actions and words come from your own beliefs and feelings.

It’s Okay to Be You

It’s more important to be real than to try and fit in by pretending to care about something you’re not passionate about. It’s perfectly fine to support causes you truly care about and to have your own unique take on things.

Wrapping Up: Being Real Is Better

In the end, even though virtue signaling might get you some likes or nods of approval, it’s not worth losing sight of who you are. Let’s aim for a world where we can all be ourselves and support things we genuinely care about without feeling the need to put on a show just to fit in.

Remember, it’s all about being real, thinking for ourselves, and standing by what truly matters to us. Let’s leave the virtue signaling behind and focus on authentic support and real conversations.
